I've started using GatherUK for my groups and it's been a breath of fresh air.
It's a UK-based non-profit built specifically to get away from those steep corporate fees. It's only £5 a month for organisers (after a free trial) and, crucially, it's completely free for members to join. No paywalls or nonsense.
